WE respond to today's High Court ruling on Article 50

WE respond to today's High Court ruling on Article 50, asking parliament to ensure the protection of women's fundamental rights.

3 November 2016

Today's High Court ruling that Parliament must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the EU exposes the huge gap between people on both sides of this debate and our decision-making processes. It underlines the fact that many people felt that their questions were not answered in the referendum campaign and that there is still no clear plan of where we are headed.

The Women's Equality Party is concerned about protecting women's fundamental rights, many of which are linked to EU legislation. If the government plans to change or do away with women's rights then it needs to present those changes to Parliament to vote on without delay. There must be transparency and accountability for the terms of Brexit, before Article 50 is triggered.

The Women's Equality Party will campaign assiduously and tirelessly to ensure that women's rights are not something to be negotiated over and that the impact of Brexit on women is properly accounted for in whatever process now lies ahead.
