Our statement on the Finsbury Park attack

The Women’s Equality Party sends its deepest condolences to the families of those injured or killed in last night’s terrorist attack in Finsbury Park.

“Today we face down another cowardly attack on our freedom, on our diversity, and on the spirit of our capital city,” said Sophie Walker, Leader of the Women’s Equality Party. “This appalling crime targeted Muslims returning home after their Ramadan prayers, and in so doing targeted every one of us.”

“We must never allow hate and intolerance to divide us. Instead, we must take our lead from the Muslim community in Finsbury Park who acted with courage and restraint when they came under attack last night.”

“We are all appalled by this hate crime, and we must stand together to face down racism and Islamophobia wherever we see it. It is time for urgent action to unite our communities, to heal, and to build a future where all are free and safe.”

“I would like to express again my sincere thanks to the emergency services staff who have helped, and continue to help, the victims of this attack and to keep our communities safe. We are so grateful for everything they do.”
