Every time sex education gets discussed, someone overreacts. Scare stories get written pretending toddlers are about to be shown graphic sexual imagery or seven year olds taught how to have sex with one another.

This means the UK has a variety of strange rules about sex education. The mechanics of sex are included in the science curriculum but when it comes to relationships, consent and sexually transmitted diseases millions of children are basically on their own.

The teachers given the job of discussing these issues often have no specialist training – and parents can take their children out of these lessons completely.

Those who oppose sex education think they’re protecting children but they’re putting them at risk. It is reckless and cruel to ask our children to navigate the complexities of relationships – let alone new challenges like sexting and revenge porn – with so little support.

Donate to support our campaign to give every child the right to good quality education on relationships and sex.
